New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel Powder (Perna canaliculus) is an extract of this cultivated shellfish. The product is a free-flowing powder which is freeze-dried to preserve the activity of the mucopolysaccharides present in the gonad. The role of mucopolysaccharides is also well-known in the control and lubrication of body joints. Mucopolysaccharides are carbohydrate groups which form a major role in all body tissues. Mucopolysaccharides has a component of connective tissue and as part of the natural joint lubricant, appears to be one of the most important factors.

It has been shown that many diseases are associated with changes of the mucopolysaccharides contents in the relevant tissues and it is significant that changes in the mucopolysaccharides content occur particularly in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This product is solely used in the Veterinary profession for treating horses, dogs and some cats.
